Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! is an upcoming Indian crime thriller film directed by Dibakar Banerjee and produced by Banerjee and Aditya Chopra.The film is based on the fictional detective Byomkesh Bakshi created by the Bengali writer Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay.The film stars Sushant Singh Rajput, Anand Tiwari and Swastika Mukherjee in principal roles. The film is scheduled for release on April 3, 2015.



Synopsis
During World War II, the nature of crime changed in Kolkata. There were air raids and there were Japanese spies as well. And that point, Kolkata was a port city, so there were naturally more crimes. In this scenario a young detective, Byomkesh Bakshy, came to solve a mystery — his first case.



Cast
Sushant Singh Rajput as Detective Byomkesh Bakshy: a young Bengali private detective.
Anand Tiwari as Ajit Bandyopadhyay: the sidekick of Byomkesh Bakshy, also an author.
Swastika Mukherjee as Anguri: a dancer and spy, the character outline of Anguri is based on famous Frisian exotic dancer Mata Hari.
Divya Menon as Satyabati: the love interest of Byomkesh Bakshy. Neeraj Kabi as Nirmal Kundu: a government detective and preceptor of Byomkesh Bakshy.

Production

Casting
Sushant Singh Rajput was roped in to play the role of Byomkesh Bakshi in mid-2013. Earlier reports suggested that fashion designer Sabyasachi's assistant, Divya Menon, will be making her debut as an actress in this film as Rajput's wife.Initially it was considered, Rani Mukherjee to play the female lead.However, Rani refused the role since the heroine has to do some bold scenes in the film.The role was later offered to Bengali actress Swastika Mukherjee.In November 6, 2014, Banerjee stated that Mukherjee role in the film is sketched along the lines of Mata Hari.In March 2014, reports suggested that Meiyang Chang will also be seen in the film in an important role.On May 2014, it was revealed that Neeraj Kabi is also part of the film.

Development Dibakar Banerjee expressed his desire to make a film on Byomkesh Bakshi so that India will get its own Indian detective.In June 28, 2013, the co-production venture of YRF and Dibakar Banerjee Productions officially announces its first directorial outing with Banerjee titled "Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!".In July 2013, Banerjee revealed that YRF had bought the rights of "31 of Byomkesh novels in all languages outside Bangla".
Prior to shooting, workshops were held for the film cast.In an interview Rajput said, "I have taken leave for two to three months for Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! after the release of Shuddh Desi Romance.
A lot has to be done for the film like the look of the 1940s’ hairstyle, body, accent, but all after this film".The costume was designed by the designer Manish Malhotra.The sets for the film were designed by Vandana Kataria and accordingly, the set up will showcase the lifestyle of the people who were living during the turbulent times of World War II.
To give the look of 1943, the heritage zone of B. B. D. Bagh was transported back to the pre-Independence era with vintage cars and old trams back on the streets.As reports suggest, a lot of VFX will be used to reflect the old world charm since the film is set in the 1940s.
In December 2014, it is revealed that the main antagonist of the film will be German dictator Adolf Hitler.



Filming
Shooting for the film began in early 2014,and ended in 12 May 2014.A part of the movie has been shot in Kolkata and Mumbai.Some scenes were shot in an abandoned mill in Mumbai’s Byculla region.Shooting locations of the film in Kolkata was finalized in February 2012.Shooting did take place in Lalbazar, Presidency University, Coffee House and Bow Barracks.The cast was reportedly seen shooting for the film in Agarpara in January 2014.



Title Name
Dibakar Banerjee's decision to change the 'i' at the end of the protagonist's surname Bakshi to 'y' was for "typographical balance". His explanation was that the 'i' felt "too thin" and that 'y' was a 'stronger alphabet".



Music
The music for the film has been composed by Sneha Khanwalkar. The track which was used in the teaser titled "Life's a Bitch" is composed by 'Joint Family', a band from New Delhi and the song will also be converted in to Hindi.



Release
The film is scheduled for a worldwide release on 3 April 2015.



Marketing
The teaser of the film was released in October 21, 2014 attached to the film Happy New Year,and features the tagline, "Expect the Unexpected".The teaser of the film was released on Vine and marks the first film to do so.The first motion poster of the film released on December 20, in Kolkata.The official trailer of the film released online on January 21, 2015.
